Hungerford n'appara\u00eet pas dans le Domesday Book. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, le manoir voisin d'Eddington \u00e9tait le principal \u00e9tablissement enregistr\u00e9 ici. La premi\u00e8re mention \u00e9crite de Hungerford date du d\u00e9but du XIIe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">L'explication la plus largement accept\u00e9e est que le nom vient d'une expression anglo-saxonne signifiant \u201c gu\u00e9 menant \u00e0 une terre plus pauvre \u201d. Il fait probablement r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 un passage de la rivi\u00e8re Kennet o\u00f9 la ville s'est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e plus tard. Une autre tradition relie le nom au chef viking Ivar (Hinguar) le D\u00e9soss\u00e9. On dit qu'il s'est noy\u00e9 dans un gu\u00e9 ici vers l'an 870. En quittant la gare, traversez le passage \u00e0 niveau et continuez tout droit jusqu'\u00e0 atteindre la voie de halage du canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kennet-and-avon-canal\">Canal Kennet et Avon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Notre promenade d'aujourd'hui consiste en une douce promenade le long du canal Kennet and Avon, entre Hungerford et Newbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Le canal Kennet et Avon a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit \u00e0 la fin du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle. Il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 une voie navigable continue de 140 km entre Londres et Bristol. La route relie la rivi\u00e8re Kennet \u00e0 Reading \u00e0 la rivi\u00e8re Avon \u00e0 Bath. Le canal a \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9 en 1810. Il est rapidement devenu une route de transport importante pour des marchandises telles que le charbon, le bois et les produits agricoles. Comme de nombreux canaux, son importance commerciale a d\u00e9clin\u00e9 apr\u00e8s l'arriv\u00e9e des chemins de fer au milieu du XIXe si\u00e8cle, et des sections sont tomb\u00e9es progressivement en ruine. En 1811, Sir John Throckmorton pari avec John Coxeter de Greenham Mills qu'un manteau de laine complet pourrait \u00eatre confectionn\u00e9 en une seule journ\u00e9e. Commen\u00e7ant \u00e0 5 heures du matin avec la tonte de deux moutons, la laine fut fil\u00e9e, tiss\u00e9e, teinte et taill\u00e9e en un manteau fini \u00e0 18h20. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 suivie par la construction du canal Kennet et Avon, qui a d\u00e9but\u00e9 en 1794 et s'est achev\u00e9e en 1810. Il a reli\u00e9 la ville \u00e0 une importante voie navigable transfrontali\u00e8re entre Londres et Bristol. Cependant, l'arriv\u00e9e du chemin de fer en 1841 a initialement contourn\u00e9 Newbury sur environ 25 km, r\u00e9duisant le commerce de passage et ralentissant la croissance \u00e9conomique de la ville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Avant de retourner \u00e0 Londres en train, il est int\u00e9ressant de prendre un peu de temps pour explorer Newbury elle-m\u00eame.
