This makes the route ideal if you want a longer nature escape without needing advance train tickets. The name means\u00a0\u201cOrped\u2019s farmstead\u201d, referring to an Anglo-Saxon landowner called Orped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">For centuries after that, Orpington remained a quiet rural village rather than a market centre. Nearby\u00a0<strong>St Mary Cray<\/strong>\u00a0was historically the main local commercial hub. This shifted Orpington from a rural village into a commuter settlement., Today the fastest journey time is about 15 minutes to London Bridge.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#f2f2f2\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fun-fact\">Anecdote amusante<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>The town that gave its name to a chicken <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>One of Orpington\u2019s most unusual claims to fame is the\u00a0Orpington chicken. In the late 1800s, local resident\u00a0William Cook\u00a0bred a new variety of chicken in the town. It became internationally popular thanks to:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><em>strong egg production<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><em>good meat quality<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><em>calm temperament<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>The breed is still recognised worldwide today and is one of the reasons Orpington\u2019s name appears far beyond the UK.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The walk starts at Orpington Station and walk 2 km towards Goddington Park. Mind the football games on Sunday morning! And this is this new residential area that we cross on our way to the Downe Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>Tip: If you wanted to shorten this walk, you could alternatively start at Chelsfield Station. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-downe-bank\">Banque Downe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Les <strong>Banque Downe<\/strong> Nature Reserve\u00a0sits in the quiet Cudham Valley near\u00a0Down House, the former home of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Darwin\">Charles Darwin<\/a>. In summer, chalk grassland flowers attract a remarkable variety of species, including several types of wild orchids alongside plants such as rock rose, marjoram and wild basil. The site also supports diverse wildlife, with many bird species recorded as well as dormice and a range of invertebrates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pratt-s-bottom\">Pratt&#8217;s Bottom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">After leaving the woodland, the route passes through\u00a0<strong>Hazelwood<\/strong>, which despite its name is actually a residential area rather than forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">From here, the landscape begins to open into fields and rolling farmland as you head towards\u00a0<strong>Homefield Spring<\/strong>, one of the best viewpoints on the route. Sitting on slightly higher ground, it offers wide views across the surrounding valley and makes a great place to pause for a short break. Follow the marked paths and continue towards the countryside beyond the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This section adds variety to the route and breaks up the woodland and farmland terrain nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-knockholt\">Knockholt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As the walk approaches the end, you have two options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Option 1:<\/strong>&nbsp;Return towards Orpington to create a circular walk<br><strong>Option 2 (recommended):<\/strong>&nbsp;Continue towards Knockholt Station via a countryside pub stop<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Continuing towards Knockholt makes the route feel like a proper point-to-point countryside adventure and avoids retracing earlier sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">About 20 minutes from Knockholt Station, you\u2019ll reach\u00a0<strong>The Bo-Peep<\/strong>, a traditional countryside pub that makes an ideal finishing stop.
