I don\u2019t believe in ghosts myself, though I couldn\u2019t resist reading up on Pluckley\u2019s haunted tales before setting off. And I have to admit\u2014it does have an eerie atmosphere that can give you the chills. At first glance it looks like a cosy pub\u2014but don\u2019t be fooled. This former hunting lodge is said to have its very own \u201cregular\u201d ghost. If you stop in for a drink on your way back, you might just spot her: an elderly lady who takes her place at a table by the window. At first she appears completely ordinary, until you notice her clothing\u2014fashionable about a century ago. The landscape quickly opens up, and you\u2019ll find yourself walking alongside wide stretches of farmland with big skies overhead. Before long, you\u2019ll reach&nbsp;<em>The Forest<\/em>\u2014not the most imaginative name for a wood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As you cut across the woodland and emerge on the other side, the scenery softens again into meadows and working farms. This section of the walk takes you across several farms one after the other, which means a whole series of stiles to climb over. It feels like a workout routine disguised as a country stroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Once you\u2019ve crossed the final stile, the path leads you back onto the road. Stick to the side until you spot the sign for&nbsp;\u201cFrench Forest Floor\u201d&nbsp;(the Frenchy in me like this name), then turn right. In the Middle Ages, it was at the heart of Kent\u2019s thriving wool trade, and later became well known for the local limestone\u2014called&nbsp;<em>Bethersden Marble<\/em>\u2014which was used in churches and cathedrals across the county. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As you walk through the village, the most striking landmark is&nbsp;St Margaret\u2019s Church, its churchyard lined with weathered tombstones. Despite its atmosphere, Bethersden has no reported ghost sightings, making it a rare break from Pluckley\u2019s catalogue of hauntings. You can find a couple of benches in front of the local public house to rest time to eat your lunch. Alternatively you can go inside and enjoy a nice pub lunch at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegeorgebethersden.com\">George<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bethersden-village\">Bethersden Village <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As you leave the village behind, keep an eye out for the&nbsp;<strong>alpacas<\/strong>. Unlike the shy sheep you passed earlier, these curious creatures aren\u2019t the least bit afraid of people. In fact, they\u2019ll  trot straight over to you, hoping you\u2019ve brought them a snack. The woods are private property, so you can\u2019t actually venture inside. Does that name sound familiar? The answer depends on when you were born and where you grew up. As a French national, I\u2019m constantly discovering little pieces of British culture and heritage, and this was a fun addition to my list:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Darling_Buds_of_May_(TV_series)\">Les bourgeons de mai<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This ITV series aired between 1991 and 1993 and followed the warm, chaotic life of the Larkin family living on this very farm. Among the cast was a young Catherine Zeta-Jones, who played Mariette, the eldest daughter\u2014a role that helped launch her career. The landscape shifts subtly and the lush green meadows gradually give way to wide fields of golden straw, shimmering in the sunlight. This is the moment you\u2019ve been waiting for\u2014you\u2019ve reached the infamous&nbsp;Screaming Woods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-screaming-woods\">Bois hurlants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">At last, the moment you\u2019ve been waiting for: walking through the infamous\u00a0<strong>Bois hurlants<\/strong>, officially known as\u00a0Dering Woods. Sprawling over 125 hectares, this forest is at the heart of countless eerie tales\u2014from ghost sightings to unexplained disappearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the most chilling stories dates back to\u00a0November 1st, 1948, when the bodies of 28 people, including 11 children, were reportedly discovered here. True to its name, this spot is steeped in unsettling tales. The most famous legend tells of a highwayman pursued by angry villagers who finally caught up with him here. Cornered, he met a violent end\u2014pinned against a tree with a sword driven through his chest.
