No, this promenade won’t take you to a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings-like location—though with names like “Lulworth” and “Durdle,” you’d be forgiven for expecting dragons or elves to appear. Instead, the Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door walk offers something even more magical: two extraordinary geological landmarks along one of the UK’s most iconic coastlines. One is a dramatic archway carved by the sea, and the other, a stunning cove nestled into the land. No need to bring your Nimbus 2000 (Harry Potter fans, you know what I mean)—just a solid pair of walking shoes and perhaps some hiking poles to enjoy this breathtaking coastal route!

An Icon of the Jurassic Coast Path
This walk forms part of the Jurassic Coast Path, a 99.2-mile (160 km) trail stretching from Corfe Castle to Loodmoor near Weymouth in Dorset. While I actually walked a much longer section—from Weymouth to Lulworth—in this post, I’ll focus on the most renowned part: Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door.
Looking for a longer route in the area? Don’t hesitate to get in touch—I have just the hike for you!

The Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door Walk
Maintenant que nous avons couvert les bases, passons à la marche !
West Lulworth
Bienvenue à West Lulworth, a charming village in Dorset sitting on a strip of clay and limestone, eroded over centuries to form the beautiful Lulworth Cove.

The village offers various amenities including a visitor centre (with a souvenir and coffee shop), a pub on the main street, and several beach shops for all your sandcastle-building needs.

🚗 Note: There is no train station in West Lulworth, so driving is your only option.
Unfortunately NO. A charge applies for the car park, see the table below.
| Up to 4 hours | £5 |
| All day | £10 |
| Motorbikes | £1 |
| Oversized Vehicles | £10 |
Lulworth Cove

From the car park, follow signs down the village’s main road to reach Lulworth Cove. Once there, you’ll have two options:
- Head to the beach
- Climb to the top of the cliff
This natural limestone cove attracts around 500,000 visitors a year, especially in peak summer months (July and August). With its clear, turquoise waters, it’s an irresistible spot for beachgoers. Unfortunately, its popularity has led to some environmental damage, prompting the installation of protective fencing.
I opted to walk up to West Point, passing by Stair Hole, a mini version of Durdle Door formed through similar erosion processes.
📍 West Point is a dramatic cliffside viewpoint offering epic photo opportunities. Since there’s only one way in and out, it’s the ideal place for a scenic rest or selfie stop. On the way back down, you can loop down to the beach for a change of scenery.

West Point is at the very end of the cliff, overlooking the cove. There is only one way in and out, making it the perfect viewpoint for outstanding pictures (and selfies). On your way back down, you can go down to the beach to take a different route.

🎬 Fun Fact: Scenes from World War Z (2013), starring Brad Pitt, were filmed at Lulworth Cove!
After soaking up the views, retrace your steps to the West Lulworth car park and prepare to continue to Durdle Door.
Durdle Door

The walk to Durdle Door begins with a steep staircase climbing up to Hambury Tout. This is the most strenuous section, gaining 345 ft (105 m) in just 0.4 miles (0.6 km). Once at the top, the path gradually descends toward the Durdle Door car park.
No, parking here costs the same as at Lulworth Cove:
| Up to 4 hours | £5 |
| All day | £10 |
| Motorbikes | £1 |
| Oversized Vehicles | £10 |
| Coaches | X Not Allowed |
From the car park, take the left-hand footpath descending towards Durdle Door and the beach. You’ll have two options:
- Left to Man O’War Cove
- Right to Durdle Door

What is Durdle Door?
Durdle Door is a 120-metre strip of limestone extending into the sea, featuring a spectacular natural arch. Formed over millennia by wave erosion, it stands as one of the UK’s most photographed coastal landmarks.
It’s part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site—alongside wonders like Yellowstone National Park and the Great Wall of China.

The name “Durdle” comes from the Old English word “Thirl”, meaning “to drill,” referencing the arch-shaped hole created by natural erosion.
How Many Steps to Durdle Door Beach?
There are 88 steps leading down to the beach for a closer look at the arch. These have recently been refurbished, making the descent (and return climb) more manageable.
Can you walk on the beach from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door?
No, unfortunately. There’s no beach path connecting the two. You can either:
- Drive, which takes about 10 minutes
- Walk via the clifftop trail described above (approx. 30 mins)

What Can You Do in West Lulworth?
After enjoying Durdle Door, retrace your steps back to the Lulworth Cove car park. Before heading home, don’t miss the chance to explore the village. Grab an ice cream at Finley’s Café or the Ice Cream Parlour, and pop into the souvenir shop at the Visitor Centre for a keepsake.

⚠️ Important: Shops and cafés in the village usually close by 4:30 pm, so plan your walk accordingly if you want to enjoy a treat or browse the shops afterward.
Bonne découverte !
